The Northern Circuit is the longest and most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a 9- to 10-day trekking adventure that takes you around the mountain’s northern side. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, the route features diverse environments, including lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. As the newest route, it is less crowded compared to others, providing trekkers with a more tranquil experience while still providing stunning views of the summit and surrounding terrain.
This route also provides the highest chance of successful summit attempts due to the gradual ascent, giving climbers ample time for acclimatization. The Northern Circuit is ideal for those seeking a quieter, more diverse Kilimanjaro experience while enjoying a more leisurely pace towards the peak
The Northern Circuit route is highly recommended by experts for its gradual ascent and stunning scenery, making it one of the best options for summit success on Kilimanjaro. The longer itinerary of 9 to 10 days allows climbers more time to acclimatize, significantly improving the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. This route is perfect for trekkers who want a quieter, less crowded experience while enjoying diverse landscapes, including lush forests, alpine meadows, and barren deserts. While suitable for all levels, it’s particularly ideal for those seeking a more immersive and scenic trekking adventure
The Northern Circuit route boasts some of the highest summit success rates among all Kilimanjaro routes, thanks to its gradual ascent and extended acclimatization period. Climbers on the 9 to 10-day itinerary enjoy optimal acclimatization time, which leads to a higher likelihood of reaching Uhuru Peak. Based on our data, the success rate for the Northern Circuit is around 90-95%, with many climbers reaching the summit comfortably. The route’s slower pace, combined with its diverse landscapes and minimal crowds, ensures that trekkers have the best chance of acclimatizing and successfully summiting Kilimanjaro

Trekking Tips for a Successful Day to Shira 1 Camp:
The trek from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp offers an exciting continuation of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Spanning around 7 kilometers (4.3 miles), this section takes approximately 4–6 hours to complete, depending on pace and weather conditions. The trail gradually ascends through alpine desert terrain, offering trekkers more open landscapes and awe-inspiring views of Mount Kilimanjaro's summit. Shira 2 Camp sits at an elevation of 3,900 meters (12,800 feet), providing a great opportunity for further acclimatization. This day’s trek is relatively gentle, with the terrain consisting of grassy plateaus and rocky paths, making it a bit easier compared to the steeper sections higher up. Along the way, trekkers may catch sight of the jagged volcanic rocks that are a characteristic feature of this route. Shira 2 Camp is located at a stunning vantage point with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the towering peak of Kilimanjaro. It’s a fantastic location to relax and take in the beauty of the mountain before continuing the ascent
Trekking Tips for a Successful Day from Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp:
This leg of the trek from Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut via Lava Tower covers approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and typically takes around 6–8 hours. The trek climbs to Lava Tower, located at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet), before descending slightly to Moir Hut at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)
Trekking Tips for a Successful Day from Shira 2 to Moir Hut via Lava Tower:
This section of the Northern Circuit trek from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp spans about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and typically takes around 5–7 hours. The trail is known for its stunning views and diverse terrain, transitioning from the high-altitude alpine desert into the moorland and savanna zones. The journey begins with a gradual descent from Moir Hut, providing an excellent opportunity for further acclimatization as you descend into the quieter, less-traveled section of the mountain. The path meanders through volcanic rock and varied vegetation, including heathers and wild grasses. As you continue, the landscape opens up to more expansive views of Kilimanjaro's northern slopes and the surrounding areas.
Trekking Tips for a Successful Day from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp:
This section of the Northern Circuit trek, from Buffalo Camp to 3rd Cave Camp, spans approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) and typically takes about 4–6 hours. It involves a moderate ascent, gradually gaining altitude while traversing rocky and barren landscapes. The trail leads trekkers through alpine desert terrain, offering remarkable views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding regions. The path begins with a steady ascent, winding through loose volcanic rock and scattered vegetation as you climb towards the 3rd Cave. As you approach the camp, the terrain becomes more rugged, and trekkers will notice the dramatic shift in the landscape, from grassy meadows to a more barren, rocky environment.
Trekking Tips for a Successful Day from Buffalo Camp to 3rd Cave Camp:
The trek from 3rd Cave Camp to School Hut is approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and usually takes around 4–5 hours to complete. This part of the journey takes trekkers up to higher altitudes, with the route offering a challenging but rewarding ascent. The trail moves through the alpine desert zone, with very little vegetation and more rocky and volcanic terrain. As you continue your climb, the landscape becomes even more barren and exposed to the elements. The route offers fantastic views of the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, and if the skies are clear, you’ll have an excellent vantage point for spotting Mawenzi Peak, which looms in the distance. The terrain is primarily a mix of rocky paths and scree, so trekking poles are helpful for maintaining balance and reducing strain on your legs.
Trekking Tips for 3rd Cave Camp to School Hut:
The final day of your trek to Mount Kilimanjaro is both the most challenging and the most rewarding. The ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro, begins very early, typically around midnight or 1 AM, to give climbers enough time to reach the summit before sunrise. The route from School Hut to Uhuru Peak is about 5–7 kilometers (3–4 miles), but the climb is steep and challenging, taking between 6 to 8 hours. The path is mostly rocky and covered in loose scree, making it physically demanding. The thin air at this altitude makes breathing more difficult, so pace yourself and take frequent breaks. As you approach Uhuru Peak, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the glaciers and ice formations. The sense of achievement at reaching the roof of Africa is unparalleled. After celebrating your success and capturing the memorable moments, the descent begins, which is just as demanding, requiring careful attention to prevent any injuries on the rocky path. After summiting, you will descend to Millennium Camp (approximately 3-4 hours) at around 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). This camp offers a bit of rest before continuing your descent. From Millennium Camp, it’s another 3-4 hour trek down to Mweka Gate, where you’ll officially complete your climb. The descent is easier than the ascent but still requires focus, especially on the steep sections
