ARUSHA NATIONAL PARKS

Discover Arusha National Park: A Convenient Destination for Unforgettable Nature Experiences

Discover Arusha National Park Wonders!

In most national parks in Tanzania, leaving your game drive vehicle outside of designated campsites and lodges is prohibited. However, Arusha National Park offers a unique opportunity to explore the park on foot with the guidance of an armed ranger. Walking through the African montane forest, surrounded by diverse wildlife and vibrant birdlife, provides an unparalleled experience that allows you to connect with nature in a way that is not possible from a vehicle.

An Ideal Location for an Unforgettable Walking Safari

The first time you spot the rusty brown of a bushbuck standing just meters from your path is a truly magical moment. You may also come across a herd of buffalo grazing only 20-30 meters away. These imposing creatures, which can weigh as much as a ton, naturally inspire awe. However, such encounters are completely safe when guided by one of Arusha National Park’s experienced rangers. As you continue your walk through the park’s lush mountain woods, you might also spot giraffes, elephants, antelopes, or even the elusive leopard, creating memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Visitors can choose the duration and difficulty of their walk. The journey begins across a plain, where herds of zebra and distant cape buffalo are often seen. As you venture toward the forest at the base of Mount Meru, there’s a good chance of spotting giraffes feeding on acacia trees. The walk culminates at the stunning Ulyulyusya Waterfall, where the water cascades directly from the mountain, offering a breathtaking end to the experience

Fascinating Facts About Arusha National Park

Though one of Tanzania’s smaller parks, Arusha National Park is rich in attractions. Among its highlights are the Arusha Waterfall and the Ngurdoto Crater. Despite its modest size of just three kilometers across, the Ngurdoto Crater is often compared to the larger Ngorongoro Crater, earning it the nickname “Ngorongoro’s younger brother” from locals. The Momella Lakes, another unique feature of the park, offer an excellent opportunity for canoeing, allowing visitors to get up close to the pink flamingos that feed in the shallow waters.

The park is also home to the towering Mount Meru, a dormant volcano that stands at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), making it the fifth-highest peak in Africa. Popular among climbers, it is often used as a training ground for those preparing to tackle the nearby Mount Kilimanjaro.
